Austin, TX The Hays County Commissioners and engineering consulting firm American Structurepoint have earned the 2025 Norman Hogue Roundabout Project of the Year Award for engineering excellence for the FM 3237 and FM 150 Roundabout project.
The award is given annually by the Texas District of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (TexITE). It is named for a longtime TexITE member who championed roundabout design throughout the state.
American Structurepoint engineers designed a single-lane roundabout to replace a dangerous “T” intersection that had a history of high-speed crashes. Key project goals focused on improving safety in a rapidly growing community while also preserving its distinctive character.
“American Structurepoint is proud to have partnered with Hays County to create safer, more efficient travel for drivers and pedestrians, while preserving the assets that make this community unique,” said American Structurepoint Senior Vice President Steven J. Miller, who leads the firm’s Texas operations.
American Structurepoint engineers collaborated with Hays County stakeholders and the Driftwood Historical Conservation Society to design a roundabout with sustainability and community character in mind. The intersection features Dark Sky-compliant lighting in a warm amber tone to reduce glare and light reflection. Hays County is a Dark-Sky community, and these lighting benefits were essential to stakeholders who wanted to enhance stargazing and protect wildlife. Additionally, American Structurepoint engineers designed the roundabout’s circle to include historic oak trees county residents wanted to preserve.
The result is an intersection that enhances safety, improves traffic flow, and preserves community character in Hays County.
