Wabash America’s Best Communities Strategic Plan
America’s Best Communities (ABC) is a nationwide competition over three years that calls on small towns and rural communities to show why their community should be considered the best community in the US. A total of 50 quarter finalists can earn $50,000, while 15 semi-finalists can earn an additional $100,000. If the community becomes a grand prize winner, they can earn as much as $3 million to help bring their entire plan to life. Wabash has advanced to the quarter finalist round. American Structurepoint’s Planning Group is guiding Wabash through the ABC competition and has developed a unique community revitalization plan for their quarter finalist submission. The Indiana Chapter of the American Planning Association selected this strategic plan for the Outstanding Communications Initiative award for 2016.
The dreams and goals of this plan were divided into four initiatives to help organize and understand the areas that make Wabash such a great community. The four initiatives include the visitor experience, livability, parks and recreation, and entrepreneurship. Each of these are critical to retaining and attracting residents, businesses, and visitors. American Structurepoint has helped the community establish their ABC steering committee and has determined how the winning funds could be used. A list of “big vision” and “BIGGER vision” projects for each of the four initiatives were identified to strengthen the community. The “big vision” projects require minimal time and money to implement and could be completed using the $100,000 award, if Wabash is selected as a semi-finalist. The “BIGGER vision” projects represent the city’s big dreams if selected as an America’s Best Communities grand prize winner.
