With two major interstates, major rehabilitation of existing bridges, and a railyard nearby, early collaboration and coordination was essential for a project near downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. In an area prone to traffic delays, the team emphasized maintaining traffic throughout construction.
Major interchange, major renovations
Interstate 75 serves as a major thoroughfare for commuters to get to downtown Cincinnati, and in 2010, the Ohio Department of Transportation began widening and resurfacing more than 8 miles of interstate, including extensive safety improvements along the way. One of the most important phases of the project involved the interchange with Interstate 74.
Challenging Maintenance-of-Traffic Design
In addition to being the connection point of two major interstates, the project was located near the largest railyard in Cincinnati. Early collaboration with the design-build team and the railyard allowed the team to adjust the MOT plan early to make certain train traffic wasn’t negatively impacted.
Worker Safety Imperative
With a very tight job site and heavy traffic at times, the team collaborated to phase construction and coordinate with deliveries to keep workers safe in addition to keeping traffic moving through the corridor. When new bridge structures were placed, temporary lane restrictions went into effect. When larger flyover beams were placed, the work was completed at night so it wouldn’t limit traffic flow. The design-build team focused on doing everything as efficiently and safely as possible.
Project Success
Thanks to the project team constantly communicating and developing innovative solutions, the project was delivered on time and under budget. Since opening to traffic, commuters experience less congestion and better traffic flow.
