Indianapolis, Indiana - The City of Indianapolis and American Structurepoint have earned a Public Works Project of the Year Award from the Indiana Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) for the Emerson Avenue Corridor project.

The revitalized Emerson Avenue corridor has transformed travel on the city’s south side by easing traffic congestion and making the area safer for drivers, pedestrians, and public transit riders. This recognition marks the third major award the city and project team have received for the corridor’s engineering excellence. Previous awards include a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and an Honor Award from the Indiana Chapter of ACEC.

"American Structurepoint is proud to partner with the City of Indianapolis to enhance safety and mobility along Emerson Avenue," - American Structurepoint Project Manager Nick Murphy

“American Structurepoint is proud to partner with the City of Indianapolis to enhance safety and mobility along Emerson Avenue,” said American Structurepoint Project Manager Nick Murphy. “Project improvements enhance access to essential services and public transportation while boosting pedestrian safety along a key corridor.”

This 2-mile stretch of Emerson Avenue, between Southport Road and County Line Road, had long experienced heavy traffic congestion due to rapid development. Positioned between two Interstate 65 (I-65) interchanges and anchored by shopping and retail areas, the corridor connects key destinations such as Franciscan Health Indianapolis, residential subdivisions, medical offices, churches, and senior living communities.

Project improvements included:
•Widening Emerson Avenue to 5 lanes, including a dedicated left-turn lane to enhance traffic flow.
•Building a new 4-lane bridge over I-65.
•Adding a new multiuse trail.
•Adding new ADA-compliant sidewalks throughout the corridor.
•Incorporating three new IndyGo bus pads and stormwater drainage upgrades.
