Steam Distribution Network, NASA Glenn Research Center

This $6.4 million project included a feasibility study and preparation of construction documents to replace a portion of the steam distribution and condensate return network. NASA wanted to promote safety, reliability, and efficiency of steam operations at the center. Design services included relocation of utility systems (steam, water, sewer, storm, etc.), layout of the new steam system, and rehabilitation of the transportation network through the campus. The steam trenches and manholes were designed to structurally withstand street loading and the harsh winter climate.

This project involved a feasibility study and preparation of construction documents for the replacement of a portion of Glenn Research Center's steam distribution and condensate return network. The age and condition of the existing system dictated that the piping and supporting infrastructure be replaced to promote safety, reliability, and efficiency of steam operations for the Center. The feasibility study evaluated the approach of replacing the systems in-kind versus other approaches that may be more cost effective, use newer technologies, offer longer life cycles or offer easier maintenance. The option of replacing the system with new technology in the same trench was selected. Design services included relocation of many utility systems (steam, water, sewer, storm, etc.), layout of the new steam system and rehabilitation of the main transportation network through the campus. The steam trenches and manholes were designed to structurally withstand street loading and the harsh winter climate.
