Michigan Boulevard
This 2-mile project rehabilitated Michigan Boulevard from 440 feet east Carroll Avenue to SR 212. The main elements of the project included milling the existing asphalt overlay, analyzing the existing underneath concrete pavement, making necessary concrete patches and retrofit load transfer bar installation at joints and cracks, and installing new asphalt. Additional elements of the project included new storm sewer, a new multi-use path, and approximately 1 mile of a center 2-way left-turn lane. New traffic signal equipment was installed at Roeske Avenue and Johnson Road. The project consisted of over 21,000 tons of QC/QA HMA pavement, 1,400 sys of PCCP patching, 5,900 lft of new storm sewer, 6,100 lft of concrete curb and gutter, 1,200 sys of concrete multi use path, 4,400 tons of HMA for widening, and 1,400 sys of concrete center curb. The project was opened to traffic in October of 2014. Utility and Railroad coordination was necessary for completion of the project.
Work was performed for the city of Michigan City in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Transportation LaPorte District. Construction costs were $5.6 million (Contract R-35201).
American Structurepoint designed and performed construction inspection services for the rehabilitation of Michigan Boulevard between US 12 and Carroll Avenue. The existing pavement width was reduced in most areas with the exception of various parking lanes throughout the project. New concrete curb and gutters, curb ramps, drive approaches, and sidewalk were constructed. The pavement patching section consisted of 3 inches of QC/QA-HMA asphalt on 9 inches of PCC base patching connecting to the existing concrete pavement on 7 inches of compacted aggregate base and Subgrade Treatment Type IV. The remaining sections of roadway have 3 inches of asphalt milled and replaced with 3 inches of QC/QA-HMA asphalt and decorative asphalt stamping at each street approach. Drainage improvements include new structures along the new curb line connecting to the existing storm sewer. This federal-aid LPA project rehabilitated approximately two miles of roadway.
