The latest issue of Environments for Aging (EFA) magazine features a profile of American Structurepoint Senior Project Architect Vanessa Shumate’s passion for designing spaces that lead seniors to live with dignity, joy, and grace.

The magazine named Shumate a 2022 Design Champion for advancing senior living design solutions that improve the lives of residents, staff, and the greater community.

"When we create environments that offer residents the chance to wander, to touch objects, and have active time as well as alone time, we're creating a safe place where they can thrive instead of exist," - Vanessa Shumate

Shumate is American Structurepoint’s senior living design expert. She has designed dozens of independent living, assisted living, affordable housing and memory care facilities for seniors across the country. Some of her more recent projects include Glasswater Creek of Whitestown, Indiana; Sweet Galilee at the Wigwam in Anderson, Indiana; Westminster Village in West Lafayette, Indiana; Astral of Franklin, Indiana; and Cearu Medical Resort in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Her approach to senior living design is guided by a deep commitment to establishing trusted partnerships with her clients and the residents they serve. She digs into community-specific needs as she identifies solutions for the space and amenities that will best serve residents and staff.

“I ask each person on my team the same question on each project, ‘How would you want to live if you lived here?’” Shumate said. “When we create environments that offer residents the chance to wander, to touch objects, to have active time as well as alone time, we’re creating a safe place where they can thrive instead of exist.”
