Celebrating 10 Years in Texas
West Smith Road Reconstruction
The City of Medina’s roadway system is a “hub and spoke” network around a central public square. The corridor is a major arterial providing access to local businesses, material suppliers, and industrial manufacturing facilities. As a result of the heavy truck traffic, the existing pavement deteriorated and required full-depth replacement.
Phase 4 was the last phase of the reconstruction of West Smith Road, a vital roadway just south of the city center, to improve these deficiencies. American Structurepoint provided survey, environmental coordination, railroad coordination, roadway design, utility coordination, final plan production, and bidding support services for the reconstruction of approximately one mile of West Smith Road. The project design included full-depth pavement reconstruction, analysis of five intersections for potential turning radii improvements, the realignment of the offset Medina Street and Baxter Street intersection to correct deficient sight distance, drive approach replacement, new sidewalk and ADA-compliant curb ramps for improved pedestrian connectivity, minor profile adjustments to improve drainage, sanitary sewer modifications, new water lines, easement preparation, and improved traffic control and signage. This ODOT LPA project required close coordination with the City and ODOT District 3 to ensure compliance with all NEPA permitting and minimize impacts to Champion Creek, as well as right-of-way acquisition support services following the Uniform Relocation Act.
