University of Tennessee at Martin Student Housing
The University of Tennessee at Martin’s new 92,000-square-foot residence hall will provide approximately 406 beds while creating a stronger environment for student connection, collaboration, and campus life. As architectural design consultant, American Structurepoint refined the housing program to balance affordability, student preferences, and capacity while designing first-floor commons spaces that bring students together. Flexible study, gathering, classroom, kitchen, and lounge spaces extend the student experience beyond individual rooms, while a central passageway strengthens pedestrian connections across campus.
American Structurepoint joined the project during early design and helped UT Martin optimize its housing program. The team transformed an initial all-single-occupancy concept into a primarily double-occupancy model with select single-bed units. This approach maintained the planned capacity of approximately 406 beds while helping address construction costs and housing affordability. The first floor is designed as a hub for student life. American Structurepoint planned a multipurpose classroom and event venue, community kitchen, study and collaboration areas, informal lounges, flexible gathering spaces, residence life offices, and a private resident director suite. Movable furnishings and dedicated storage allow spaces to adapt to different activities, while interior finishes incorporating UT Martin’s branding reinforce campus identity. The design also considers the residence hall’s role within the broader campus. A central open passageway improves pedestrian connectivity between campus destinations, while the taller, more efficient building replaces an aging residence hall and allows for additional green space. Scheduled for completion in fall 2028, the new residence hall is designed to support evolving student needs and UT Martin’s long-term vision for campus living.
