SR 44 and Kepler Road Roundabout

The intersection of SR 44 / East New York Avenue and Kepler Road needed operational and safety enhancements to improve the flow of traffic. To achieve these goals, American Structurepoint converted the signalized intersection to a multi-lane roundabout. As SR 44 is an emergency evacuation route and a significant commuter corridor between the City of DeLand and I-4, the 2-lane roundabout was constructed under traffic, resulting in complex maintenance-of-traffic design.

The project required five main phases of construction, with two of those main phases having two sub-phases each. The roundabout was constructed utilizing the FDOT Standard Plans, temporary pavement, low-profile barrier wall, and temporary signals to maintain vehicular traffic and bicycle facilities during all phases of construction. The project also included approximately a quarter mile of roadway widening to install a two-way left-turn lane on SR 44. American Structurepoint provided roadway design, maintenance-of-traffic, signing/pavement marking design, traffic operational and safety analysis, and public involvement services for the project. The resulting roundabout improves flow on this urban principal arterial while also accommodating large trucks, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
