South Bend Equalization Basin

American Structurepoint’s mission is to improve quality of life for the people and the communities we serve, and we partner with groups across the country to make a difference every day. In South Bend, Indiana, our efforts to improve life for area residents is by enhancing conditions of the St. Joseph River.

Like many communities across the country, South Bend has a combined sewer system that overflows during heavy rain. The primary water source that receives these overflows is the St. Joseph River. Partnering with city officials, our team analyzed over 30 solutions to determine the best option to reduce these overflows at one of the most significant locations in their system.

American Structurepoint is designing an innovative, above-ground prestressed concrete tank that will hold 3 million gallons of water, enough to fill 4.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The tank will allow water to slowly release into the city’s wastewater collection system for treatment as opposed to polluting the St. Joseph River.

During the design process, our experts recommended switching to a guaranteed savings contract, which allows our team to coordinate and collaborate with a contractor to produce the most cost-effective design of the tank. With rising construction costs, this solution will speed up the overall timeline and offer significant savings to the client.

Our partnership with the City of South Bend will keep the river clean and lessen flood damage for decades to come. If you want to be part of a growing utility infrastructure team that gets to help clients like South Bend, see the opportunities available on our website.
