Mount Vernon Master Plan
Innovation is at the core of our Planning + Economic Development group—we think outside the box. Finding inventive ways to use space and create a vision to benefit communities is what we live for, and we’re no strangers to it. While developing the master plan for the City of Mount Vernon, Indiana, we faced the challenge of repurposing large quantities of unused space in vacant surface parking and alleyways between buildings. Our team saw potential where everyone else saw a place to pile trash.
As part of our “Alleyway Activation” initiative, we reimagined several vacant alleyways to serve as spaces to hold events, house public art, serve as a secondary entry into local businesses, and beautify the community. Vacant parking lots are another issue that municipalities often encounter during the planning process. We proposed a unique diagonal pattern of varying stone and concrete bands to replace the pavement, creating an aesthetically pleasing space that serves as a public plaza and a place to house events. Every community is unique, and each planning initiative is curated for the residents. We thrive on the complexity that comes with creating each new plan and presenting new ideas catered specifically to each client.
