Indiana University Indianapolis Academic Health Center Medical Education and Res
American Structurepoint’s structural engineering team thrives on complexity and overcoming barriers to achieve our clients’ vision. Whether it’s using a different building material or adjusting the original design to make the building more efficient, our innovative team addresses complexities better than anyone by drawing on a deep well of resources and expertise.
The new Indiana University Indianapolis Academic Health Center Medical Education and Research Facility will serve as a center for learning and research to provide critical medical breakthroughs. The 12-story building includes several unique visual elements and façade details, and the classrooms and labs will provide an innovative space to facilitate important research.
A critical design challenge our team solved when designing the building structure was housing high-tech research equipment appropriately, which required careful consideration of floor vibration. Our structural team worked closely with architects from Perkins&Will and Browning Day to develop a structural steel floor system that is stiffer and stronger than a typical building to mitigate vibration concerns.
Our structural engineering team also collaborated with Perkins&Will and Browning Day to bring Indiana University’s vision of the building's atrium to life. The atrium will be a focal point with its 65-feet-by-65-feet skylight. Instead of placing columns along the edge of the space, our team designed a column-free area that will highlight the atrium’s natural light and create the open area our client envisioned.
American Structurepoint improves the quality of life for the people and communities we serve. By having this state-of-the-art facility, medical experts will be able to conduct ground-breaking research while educating the leaders of tomorrow.
