Celebrating 10 Years in Texas

16th Street/Crawfordsville Road/Georgetown Road Intersection Reconstruction

This high-profile intersection improvement project reconstructed the existing intersection of 16th Street, Georgetown Road, and Crawfordsville Road to a new alignment with a concrete roundabout at this key artery between the Town of Speedway, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), and Downtown Indianapolis. Elements of the roundabout included decorative concrete pavers at crosswalks and in the truck apron, irrigation system, decorative lighting, and landscaping consisting of trees, perennials, and ground cover.  Engineering consultants from American Structurepoint performed both design and construction inspection services for the town in conjunction with the INDOT Greenfield District.

Additional work elements included:

  • 7,200 sq yd of concrete pavement
  • 3,800 lft of new storm sewer
  • 2,100 lft of new water main
  • 1,100 lft of new sanitary sewer
  • 350 lft of cured-in-place sanitary pipe liner
  • 400 lft of 42-inch HOBAS sanitary pipe liner
  • 7,200 lft of multiple concrete curb sections
  • Over 2,500 sq yd of concrete sidewalk

Utility coordination was necessary for the roundabout installation, including two liquid fuel pipelines through the center of the roundabout alignment, as well as coordination with IMS. Another challenge was developing a construction phasing plan that would work to maintain access for pedestrians and vehicles during the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400. Our engineering company performed both design and construction inspection services for the town of Speedway in conjunction with the INDOT Greenfield District, and the construction costs were $4.1 million.
