West 17th Street Intersection

Bloomington, Indiana

The intersection of Arlington Road, 17th Street, and Monroe Street was upgraded to a one-lane roundabout with four legs. The upgrades were provided to enhance the capacity of the intersection for future increased traffic flow and to help mitigate a known flooding problem in the area. The project involved new asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, and storm sewer. Some challenges to the design of the project include building in an area with shallow bedrock, avoiding existing utility conflicts, and providing continuous access for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The skewed alignment of the Arlington Road approach also required an innovative approach to the roundabout geometry. American Structurepoint provided survey, road design, environmental permitting, stormwater detention design, and right-of-way engineering services.
