Reconstruction of six miles of US 52 from Vickie Drive to CR 500 W widened the existing 2-lane roadway to a 5-lane urban arterial highway. The centerline of the new roadway will weave back and forth across the existing centerline in order to miss environmentally sensitive areas. Included in the project is the design of new storm drainage culverts, intersection improvements with new turn lanes, and right-of-way acquisition. The $50 million project, which included 14 intersecting roadways, was designed to alleviate congestion along the roadway and at the intersections while controlling access along the corridor. Context-sensitive design was used to lessen impacts to the local community. A Community Advisory Committee (CAC) was formed to obtain input from community leaders in order to define the final scope of the project and satisfy the NEPA process. Features coordinated through the CAC process included pavement cross-section, right-of-way requirements, landscaping, historic properties, and two cemeteries.
