During the summer of 2006 it became apparent to the City of Terre Haute that the $178 million Union Hospital expansion was going to have a major impact on traffic patterns in the historic Collett Park Neighborhood. In addition to generating more traffic, the hospital expansion plans called for closing a portion of Seventh Street, which serves at the primary north/south corridor through Collett Park. In order to calm the fears of local residents and keep the hospital expansion on schedule, American Structurepoint prepared a comprehensive study of the traffic impacts to the surrounding neighborhood. Open house-style meetings were held to assess the residents’ concerns and discuss opportunities to improve the community. Working closely with the City of Terre Haute, Union Hospital, and the Collette Park Neighborhood Association, American Structurepoint studied the traffic operations of 14 neighborhood intersections and presented recommendations to improve traffic flow and provide neighborhood traffic calming measures. Based on the traffic study recommendations, the City Council approved the Union Hospital expansion project.
