Valparaiso continues to face development pressures on its northeast side. Vale Park Road, a current two lane road was not designed to work as a major east-west thoroughfare but was handling increasingly higher volumes of traffic in a mainly residential neighborhood. The intent of the project was to facilitate increasing traffic volumes, creating a signature gateway corridor into the city of Valparaiso and improving safety for pedestrians and residents surrounding the road. American Structurepoint worked closely with city officials, a project advisory committee, and the public through community meetings to develop a corridor plan that included alternatives for roundabouts and other traffic-calming measures, public transportation, wayfinding, public art and other aesthetic elements, and a combination of sidewalk improvements and the addition of a multi-use trail to turn an overtaxed road with safety concerns into an effective community amenity.
