American employers are losing an estimated $225.8 billion a year because of healthcare expenses and health-related losses in productivity, and those numbers are rising. Many American adults spend most of their waking hours at sedentary jobs. Their lack of regular physical activity raises their risk for a host of medical problems, such as obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Midwest-based architecture and engineering firm American Structurepoint is working toward improving the health and productivity of its employees, having developed the Healthpoint wellness team. Since its implementation in 2011, 86 percent of the firm’s employees now have lower health risk factors.
Healthpoint initiatives include:
Because of Healthpoint’s initiatives, American Structurepoint has been recognized as a Gold-Level Fit-Friendly Company by the American Heart Association (AHA) for helping employees eat better and move more. Gold-Level employers not only offer employees physical activity options but promote an overall wellness culture in the workplace by meeting at least nine criteria outlined by the AHA in the areas of physical activity, nutrition, and culture.
“This is a great achievement and shows American Structurepoint employees are driven to improve their overall health,” said President and COO Rick Conner of American Structurepoint. “Congratulations to our staff for making wellness a part of your daily routine!”
